本剧讲述了村姑斯特莎·捷尔诺娃（Екатерина Астахова饰）跌宕起伏的情感故事。斯特莎的父母在她七岁时为保护教堂的圣像画去世，还背上了盗窃的恶名。与爷爷相依为命的她一心想洗清父母的冤屈，并前往大城市学习绘画。来到小村进行教堂修缮的莫斯科画家鲍里斯（Иван Стебунов饰）给予她久违的希望，而青梅竹马的旧日伙伴叶戈尔（Александр Давыдов饰）于此时复员回乡，急切地想与她成婚。斯特莎陷入一个又一个两难境地与圈套，不惜一切代价捍卫自己的幸福......
Plot Summary:The struggle of an ordinary girl who was tragically orphaned at the age of seven. Although not responsible for her parents' death, Stesha blames herself and carries the pain and guilt with her into adulthood - She is forced to endure many ordeals: she marries a man she does not love, she is driven to abandon one son while having to take care of the other and she has to plot her escape from her own 'cage' of a loveless marriage. Finally, she has to clear her father's name by searching for a valuable religious icon, which her father was accused of stealing. Gentle, sweet and self-sacrificing, she is transformed, by the end of the film, into a strong, independent woman, capable of returning love and ready to do anything to ensure the happiness of her children.
